Today we were off to visit Edinburgh Castle. A place that fascinates me. Set on an ancient volcano above the city of Edinburgh, the history of this place is long and varied. Our guide informed us that it is the most invaded castle in all of Europe, at a total of 26 times. Usually by other Scots. It is amazing. It is not just one castle but a collection of buildings. Not all built at the same time. For instance, this one was built about 900 years ago (it is actually the oldest building in Edinburgh, a chapel dedicated to St Margaret):

And this one, which was built in the 1800’s because Queen Victoria thought the place didn’t look “castley” enough (the statues are Robert the Bruce on the left and William Wallace on the right):

The views from there are spectacular and breathtaking.

We had High Tea (the cost was as high as the tea)

Tried a swig of whiskey, well, I did, and had a fantastic time wandering around.
We then started strolling down the Royal Mile where we met a guy with an owl

And then went for a fish and chips lunch.

And ended up at Holyroodhouse Palace. This Palace is where the Royal Family stay when they are visiting Edinburgh. It is also where Mary, Queen of Scots live, amongst others. It was a very interesting place to explore. It also has an old abbey which is enchanting.

And that pretty much sums up our trip to Edinburgh. I do wish we had more time here to be able to explore the highlands but not this time. It just leaves me an excuse to come again. I have really loved what I have seen.
Tomorrow, we are back to London.
