Day 8 – Murano and Burano

Today was supposed to be for the Doge’s Palace but we got a slightly late start and so today was for exploring laneways and alleys. We had a tour booked for 2pm. We lunched on a delicious pizza and Jacob tried a marzipan banana.

If you zoom in on this photo he is proudly holding his marzipan banana

After lunch we were off on our tour to the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano is world famous for their glassmaking while Burano is all about the lace. Jacob was all about the boat ride.

I have to say the glassmaking demonstration at Murano was somewhat underwhelming. A full 5 minutes of someone making a horse. While fascinating, I would have loved to see some glassblowing. We saw some amazing and beautiful pieces, in the inevitable shop, and we saw some equally eyewatering prices. €600 for a 6 piece set of glasses. We did buy a photo frame at a stupid price but, holiday….

After Murano was Burano, which was stunning. Colourful houses, lots of shops, relaxed. We loved it.

Burano is lace making. So we went to a cookie shop and bout lots of cookies. And then we went to the lace making demo. Which was slightly longer than the glassmaking and, at least, had commentary. After spending more money there, it was a relacing boatride back before dinner and then bed.
