Day 0.5 – Roma – We have arrived….finally

Well, it seemed like a great idea. Flying Sydney to Rome with a 1.5 hour stopover in Dubai. I mean, who wouldn’t want to get there quicker?

We travelled for 24 hours, basically non-stop all up. We were up at 3am to check in for our 6am flight and got to our hotel at 9pm, Rome time. After a room service cabonarra for Jacob, we were both sound asleep by 10pm. Which was great because we were fresh for our first full day.

Our first flight was great. 14.5 hours in total but the seats were roomy, the entertainment was good and the food was very tasty. Breakfast was pancakes with Berry compote, fruit and yoghurt.

Lunch was beef stew with Asian salad and a slice of blueberry cheesecake for desert. Both meals were delicious.

We both got a couple of hours sleep, not enough but what can you do? I watched a couple if movies, the live action Lilo and Stitch, The Surfer (Nicholas Cage) and then half of season 1 of The White Lotus. Tried to read a bit if my book but got distracted by food and sleep.

We had a comfortable amount of time, in Dubai, to grab a drink while transferring gates and then boarding a much smaller and enormously more uncomfortable aircraft for the next 6 hours of our journey. The minutes dragged by as we were not allowed to move the the vacant seats in front of us because they were premium seats and we had not paid the extra. Basically the airline rules are they must remain empty if they were not paid for. I get it but I (and a lot of other passengers) were not happy about it. I was happy  to see they actually let a family with a small baby move there. At least that family was much more comfortable.

We only had one meal on this flight, lunch, which was Chicken Pescatore (sorry not picture, I was not in a happy place and just wanted to sleep by then).

I ended up finishing the second half of The White Lotus and watched the “new” Top Gun movie – Top Gun Maverick. It was ok.

Despite the discomfort and being so tired we both got through it in fairly good spirits and were just really happy to arrive.
